SPELL-A-MANIA CHAMPIONSHIP BELT HELPERS!!
Volunteers are needed to help our Youth-For-R.E.A.L program make their championship belts for their Spell-a-Mania competition.
Youth-For-R.E.A.L. Spell-A-Mania is an ongoing event that takes place throughout the academic year. Students are provided a list of words to study and are responsible for learning the spelling, meaning and usage of the words. Spell-A-Mania has six levels of competition: kindergarten; 1st & 2nd grades; third through fifth grades; 6th grade; 7th grade; and 8th grade. The three students who score the highest grade in each class then move on to the semi-finals of Spell-A-Mania to compete for their grade’s championship title during the Spell-A-Mania Kickoff event early in the year.
The winners of the Kickoff event must ward off challenges from their peers throughout the rest of the year. At the semi-finals contestants compete to become the Spell-A-Mania Champion for their grade. The final student remaining becomes the champion for their grade category and is presented the Spell-A-Mania Championship Belt and a savings account with an initial $100.
The Spell-A-Mania Championship Belts are beautifully decorated using fabric, paper glue and string. The winner of the Spell-A-Mania finals gets to keep the championship belt forever. BECOME PART OF THE INWOOD HOUSE MENTORING PROGRAM
The Mentoring Program was created to help our young pregnant and
parenting teens in all programs foster a healthy and positive transition
into parenthood by sustaining positive role models in their life.
Our mentors complete a training on the role of a mentor, active
listening skills, confidentiality, empathy, parenting skills, grief
and loss issues, and engaging in effective communication skills.
Our staff provides on-going support and training throughout the
mentoring experience.
- Peer-to-Peer Mentoring: Provides parenting moms with an opportunity
to give back some of what they learned and gained as a result of
participating in Inwood House programs in the past. The program
pairs former Inwood House residents (parenting moms) with pregnant
teens currently in the Maternity Residence. The Peer Mentors emphasize
the benefits of education and peer mentors also serve as coaches
to our pregnant teens and share with them the stages of pregnancy
and childbirth.
- Adult Mentoring: Our adult mentors provide the cultural and intergenerational
enrichment to our young mothers. Volunteer mentors have a wide range
of personal and professional backgrounds, and are recruited from
area businesses, government agencies, professional associations
and community organizations. The Adult Mentors focus on parenting
issues, education/vocational mentoring, socialization enhancement
and recreational/cultural enrichment.
To find out more on the Mentoring Program please contact Marina Meyers at 212.861.4400 extension 212 or mmeyers@inwoodhouse.com;
